Heaven's Design Team Vol. 1 by Hebi-Zou

 

This is actually really cute-- and really informative! Imagine if God became so busy that he outsourced his duties to Japan. That's basically the premise of Heaven's Design Team, which is about a group of people, all named after planet, who create animals. Some of them are particular-- Neptune creates water animals, Pluto creates creepy ones, and Saturn wants to create the ~perfect~ magical horse-- but all of their creations are really interesting.

Surprisingly, this book actually ended up becoming really educational. It talks about why a unicorn and a pegasus can't exist from a scientific perspective, comparing them to birds and elk, and how they differ structurally. You learn that koalas are surprisingly creepy, anteaters and armadillos are distant relatives, and that certain kinds of whales can release "sonic blasts" up to 250 decibels.

This is a shounen manga but I think boys and girls will enjoy it equally because it features the perfect blend of cute and disturbing animals and it's also really fun and funny. I would definitely read more in the series, especially because of that CLIFFHANGER.
