The Spires by Kate Moretti

This is like the dimestore version of THE SECRET HISTORY, only with even bigger and unbearable assholes. So, basically, I loved it. THE SPIRES is a dual timeline (my favorite!) story. The present chapters are about a woman named Penelope who lives with her husband and two children and is haunted by the secrets of the past. The past chapters are about five friends: Penelope, Jack, Willa, Bree, and Flynn, who live in a deconsecrated church and call themselves "The Spires." They're Penn State grads and the most pretentious and affected assholes you could ever hope not to meet. But one day, their friendship slowly begins to degrade and then bad things happen.

I loved this book. It has so many of my favorite tropes: friendships gone sour, dark academia vibes, toxic smut/romance, gothic elements, a gaslit woman wondering if she's slowly going mad, and twists upon twists upon twists. Kate Moretti is an author I've had my eye on for a while but I've never actually gotten 'round to reading her work. Now I think I might have to because this lady writes the sorts of stories I only wish I could think up as an author! Can I be you when I grow up?

P.S. Some people didn't like the twist or the ending but I actually liked both. The former took me by surprise and the latter ended a pretty nasty story on a faint note of hope.

4.5 to 5 out of 5 stars
