What You Never Knew by Jessica Hamilton

So one of my favorite tropes is when a woman who's left town comes back to her hometown to confront the secrets of her past. When I found out that this book was exactly that, with some dead sister and narcissistic mother drama thrown in, I was like OMG! And it almost worked... until I got bored. Here's the thing, I have depression, and when it kicks in, sometimes it's like being an unreliable reader, you know? I'm never sure if my lack of interest stems from the book itself or what's going on in my head, but once I lose interest, it's like a switch has been flipped and I just can't really get back into the book.

I will say that the blending of the supernatural into the mystery didn't really work for me and ended up feeling a little too precious. I would have liked this more if it were a straightforward thriller, probably. There was also too much telling and not quite enough showing. I wanted more creepiness and drama than I got from what I read.

Author is a good writer but I think there's a stylistic incompatibility here, with this book, for me. I'd probably read more of what she wrote though.
