The way this is written is just too weird. The imaginary friend stuff, some of the odd stylistic choices (clunky narrative that seems like it's trying too hard to be cutesy), unnatural dialogue... none of it is working. I also was a little surprised that it's a fantasy because the tag of this book, "A First Generation Ivy League Odyssey," made me think it was going to be a contemporary dark academia book. When I picked this up I was surprised that so many people seemed lukewarm on this but now I see why.
