Loveless. Childless. Clueless. by Miren B. Flores

Looking for the romance equivalent of someone using your gut as a Krav Maga punching bag? Look no further.

LOVELESS. CHILDLESS. CLUELESS. is an #OwnVoices Filipino romance, and the author is part of a romance network of Filipino authors called #romanceclass. One of my friends on Goodreads told me about it after I confessed to my fondness of LOVE AND OTHER CHEMICAL REACTIONS and I'm so glad she did, because LOVELESS might just be the best one yet.

Our heroine, Anna, has just left a fifteen-year-long relationship. Now in her mid-thirties, she can't help but feel grief over what she's lost. In beautiful, aching prose, Flores writes about Anna's slow acceptance of her single status, her depression, her loneliness, and her slow advancements and backslides as her heart begins to heal.

It's been a while since I read a romance that was so open and honest about feelings. We get to see why Anna and her ex, Miggy, broke up. Nobody's the villain in this story; they are just two different people whose personalities clash a little, and those clashes grew worse over time as annoyance mounted and the chasm of miscommunication between them grew. I also really liked how Flores showed the difference between romantic and companionate love, and how while that first blush of attraction can be exciting, it's also unstable and nerve-wracking.

Some people won't like the ending to this book, but I did. It ends on a hopeful note, which is something a lot of us romantics need - especially those of us with relationships gone sour.

What a beautiful book.

4.5 to 5 out of 5 stars
